Wednesday evening walking home from work, I decided to take a new route home. I have my quiet route down Morningside Park, and then I have my "everybody in the world bump into me" route, east of Morningside Park.
I am walking down 8th avenue and 122nd street, and saw a statue that I had to have passed at least 25 times in the car this summer. I stop in my tracks, this statue was so detailed and deep. Deep because of the story, and reading about it in school, just doesn't compare. I mean you can look at this statue and read the story, better than any author could ever write about the women.
If you don't know by now that women is the great Harriet Tubman. To me the greatest black woman besides my mama, lol that has ever walked the face of the earth.
I know you might think I am bugging but the details of the faces in her dress along with the chains, and the roots hanging off the back of her dress were impeccable. I really don't think my camera did the justice this statue deserves. All I can say is that you need to visit it yourself.
The artist did a superb job with this one, I heard they are building Frederick Douglass next, on 110th and of course Frederick Douglass Blvd.
It is a shame though these statues appear in the middle stages of the regenification of Harlem. Lol, along with the condo's named after historic African Americans, Rosa Park condo's, and others. When the majority of African Americans who live in Harlem can't afford these condo's, and the ones who can move to the burbs...Ok, Ok, as the pastor told Kanye, your 5 minutes is up...Enjoy
